Care for Future Generations
Every generation has a duty to God and the future to pass the earth on to its children and their children for generations to come in better condition than it was received. This is a fundamental moral duty. This moral duty implies that the earth is to possess a full complement of diverse species, beauty, fertility, stability and fruitfulness for the delight, enjoyment and healthy living of future generations. The disregard of this responsibility is a grievous sin (Rev. 11:18). How right will it be to pass on oceans no longer swimable, surfable, fishable because of the toxins, plastics, sewage and trash within? To pass on oceans bereft of colorful fish and coral, whales, dolphins, turtles, and otters, no longer fertile and diverse enough to produce a dinner of lobster of tuna, or of kelp? Or lands in drought and dust, or besieged by storm after devastating storm?
